A Free Black Press

The Black Press was a tool for Black Americans to build community, express agency and mobilize politically. Agency means someone can make an impact on their surroundings. The Black Press allowed Black people to make an impact by preserving their identity and building community and influence.

Freedom's Journal

These citizens took matters into their own hands and established the first official outlet of the Black Press: the Freedom’s Journal. Over time, many famous Black publishers, editors, journalists, etc. have contributed to the Black Press. For instance, Frederick Douglass and Mary McLeod Bethune.

The New York Amsterdam News is New York City’s oldest Black newspaper. Its offices are located in Harlem.
