    Author Conversation with Stephen A. Smith

    Stephen A. Smith– featured commentator and executive producer on ESPNʼs First Take talkshow–spoke at the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, about his book Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes! This event is in a series sponsored by EEAPC as part of the launch of the pre-K Black Studies curriculum. The series includes Read Alouds at elementary schools and Author Conversations in middle and high schools throughout New York City. Each event includes a Black author-celebrity, sharing about their book and encouraging students in their educational and personal journies.

    Author Conversation with Cheryl Wills

    Cheryl Wills–the nationally recognized award-winning television personality and New York native–shared an excerpt of her book in the elementary school Read Aloud. This event is one in a series sponsored by EEAPC as part of the launch of the pre-K Black Studies curriculum. The series includes Read Alouds at elementary schools and Author Conversations in middle and high schools throughout New York City. Each event includes a Black author-celebrity, sharing about their book and encouraging students in their educational and personal journies.

    Women Behind the Mic

    “Women Behind the Mic” will hold a Master Class on the main stage at the Apollo Theater featuring women who have worked behind the scenes in Music Entertainment and Media. This event celebrates and commemorates National Music In Our Schools Month, Womenʼs History Month, and The 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop! Entitled: “Attaining A Seat At The Table”, the session taught students about what opportunities are available in the Music Industry through a video interactive presentation. The Educational Creative Collective presented comprehensive programs about careers in Music & Entertainment; Digital Music Arts Programming; and a full Film career curriculum which the SIC Film School will teach at the LionsGate
    Studio in Yonkers.

    The “Women Behind The Mic” are veteran executives and the engines behind the most iconic artists of all time like; Whitney Houston, Salt-N-Pepa, Sean "Puffy/Diddy" Combs, Mariah Carey, The Notorious B.I.G., Ashanti, Nelly, Usher, Toni Braxton, Prince, Mary J. Blige, and many more. The sale of Trillions of records worldwide have been a direct result of the women who have curated what is known as Hip Hop and Pop Culture today.

  • Let’s Read Me + You Series

    Let’s Read Me + You Series

    Please join the New York City Department of Education and The Education Equity Action Plan (EEAP) Coalition as we kick off the first-ever Black Studies: Let’s Read Me + You Series with iconic activist, educator, and history-maker Dr. Hazel Dukes at Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School and Frederick Douglass Academy.

    WHO: Dr. Hazel Dukes, who just celebrated her 90th birthday, is President of the NAACP New York State Conference and a member of the NAACP National Board of Directors. Dr. Dukes is an active and dynamic leader who is known for her unselfish, devoted track record for improving the quality of life in New York State.

    WHY: The Black Studies: Let’s Read Me + You Series is organized by the Education Equity Action Plan Coalition, whose mission is to develop an interdisciplinary Pre-K-12 Black Studies curriculum that acknowledges the history and contributions of Black people and creates an empowering educational environment for all students. This is a groundbreaking initiative committed to uplifting the voices, experiences, and legacies of Black students so they are reflected and celebrated in the public school curriculum for the benefit of every student and for the overall improvement of our educational system.

    Black Studies Trivia Night

    The Black Studies Trivia Night hosted by the EEAPC is a networking and community-building event among NYC educators to meet others participating in the Black Studies curriculum pilot. Educators will grow their knowledge base, test their Black Studies awareness and build community with peers. This trivia night is the first in a series of events this spring to launch the Black Studies curriculum.
